Question: Small business owners in rural Midwest areas, especially in rural counties of Illinois, have unique leadership issues that demand immediate investigation. The problem is that significant barriers prevent small business leaders from learning and using the leadership skills necessary for financial success, such as poor educational attainment, inadequate infrastructure, and financial limitations (Nursaid et al., 2023; Medina, 2023). Despite continuous attempts, little is known about how leadership practices might promote company expansion and sustainability (Kaufman et al., 2006).
Transformational leadership, which stresses inspiring and motivating staff members, cultivating a vision, and promoting innovation and change, will be the subject of this study. Small business owners in rural locations that must deal with escalating economic constraints and swift technical breakthroughs, transformational leadership is especially pertinent (Brooks et al., 2016). Additionally, the study's theoretical underpinnings will be based on the Transformational Leadership Theory (Burns, 1978; Bass, 1985), which will direct the investigation of how these leadership techniques can be modified for use in rural areas in order to get around resource constraints and improve economic resilience. Through the use of this theoretical framework, we will be able to examine the ways in which visionary leadership supports long-term corporate viability, employee empowerment, and change facilitation.
This study is both important and essential since previous research has frequently examined the difficulties small Midwest towns face, but has rarely described how well leadership strategies can help them overcome these difficulties. This study gap highlights the necessity for a focused examination of leadership strategies tailored to rural environments.
This exploratory case study aims to collect qualitative data by means of in-depth interviews with small business owners in rural locations, document evaluations of company records and regional economic reports, and direct observation of business activity. The study will reveal how transformational leadership theory-informed leadership strategies impact the sustainability of businesses. By focusing on leadership strategy, this study aims to offer useful insights that tackle problems with resource access and leadership shortcomings, guaranteeing all-encompassing assistance for rural business owners in attaining financial stability and expansion.
