Assume that you have been contracted as an external consultant to the CEO of Dell Inc. You have been asked to respond to the following questions, which the CEO will consider in seeking to develop a sustainable competitive advantage by Dell over its major rivals (Acer, Apple, HP, and Lenovo, as documented in the case study). Responses are to be based upon the information available at the timeline which the case study represents (2009).
Part 1 (50%)
Michael Dell in his fiscal 2008 review stated that Dell's strategy "would be to focus both on becoming more competitive by reducing costs and growing the company in the consumer, enterprise and emerging markets" (p. 8). Focusing on opportunities for sustainable growth within emerging markets, develop a concise potential "services mix" (including all of the 7 Ps) that could be utilised in serving customers in these emerging markets and provide the opportunity for generating competitive advantage.
Part 2 (50%)
There is considerable discussion concerning the movement of companies toward adopting an SDL (service-dominant logic) customer centric orientation in the markets that they wish to serve. Construct an action plan you would recommend to Dell that would encourage co-creation and co-production from its consumer and enterprise clients as well as its suppliers. Please be specific with your recommendations.
