Question

Pediatric gastroenteritis, often causing frequent, watery diarrhea and vomiting, can lead to rapid dehydration and electrolyte imbalances. Fever, a common symptom, also contributes to fluid loss through sweating. Dehydration in children manifests as dry mouth, reduced urination, tearless crying, lethargy, and irritability. Evaluating severity requires assessing diarrhea frequency, vomiting nature, medication response, dietary changes, and fluid intake. Vital signs like increased heart rate and decreased blood pressure, along with reduced skin turgor, dry mucous membranes, and sunken eyes, indicate dehydration. Lab tests to assess kidney function and electrolyte balance are crucial.
