Cultural, socioeconomic, and spiritual factors can all affect a persons perception about mental health and treatment. These factors shape beliefs, stigma, access, and coping mechanisms in ways that can either support or hinder mental health awareness and care. Someone who is low income may not want to seek treatment due to the cost of medications and how much a visit may cost if they are not covered under insurance. This tends to be one of the most popular reasons for someone not seeking help. A lot of lower income families may have drug addictions which can worsen the symptoms of mental health as well, this is something I have witnessed first hand growing up in a very low income family in a really scary neighborhood. In certain cultures, it may be considered a dishonor to the family and may delay treatment due to the persons not wanting to bring shame upon their families. For the time I lived with my grand parents, my grandfather whom was Asian-Indian would always bring up how shameful it was to have anxiety/ depression and it lead my grandmother to drink to ease her issues. Hearing this, it made me shameful and I still refuse to seek treatment for my own anxiety. How do I respond to this post?
