Sometimes, when people think about the opening statements and closing arguments in trials, they envision attorneys giving passionate speeches, triggering the emotions of the jurors. If you have ever watched the old television show, "Perry Mason," or even some episodes of Law and Order, you may have seen this. What you do not see, are attorneys incorporating technology to explain to jurors what the evidence will show or to argue to jurors why the evidence that was presented warrants a verdict in their client's favor. This week, you learned about software that helps attorneys with trial presentation, with a focus on opening statements and closing arguments. Note that this is in contrast to the software that you will learn about in Module 8, where the focus is on the presentation of evidence. What are the pros and cons to utilizing technology to present opening statements and closing arguments at trial? Are there any benefits to presenting things the old way? Do you believe that technology may be an unnecessary distraction and take away from the presentation of an attorney who is naturally a very compelling speaker?
