Case Study
While having dinner with friends at a restaurant, a customer explains to his server that he has a shellfish allergy. The waitress acknowledges that she is aware of the allergy and highlights some menu items that do not contain shellfish. The customer orders his food. The customer notices that a different person delivers the food to the table-not the server who took his order. Within minutes of eating the first bite, he has an itching sensation around his mouth. He calls the original server to the table, and she realizes that a mistake has been made. Knowing that time is now an issue, she asks her manager what to do next. By the time the manager arrives at the table, the customer's friends have helped him use an epi-pen containing epinephrine, a hormone used to treat serious allergic reactions. In addition, they have called 911. The customer is unable to speak and is lying on the floor. Several other guests surround the table. The manager meets the ambulance at the door. Everyone hopes the customer gets to the hospital in time.
1. What might have happened to the customer's order?
2. Who is responsible for this mishap?
3. Did the server and the manager respond appropriately? Explain.
4. What are the possible outcomes of this mistake?
