An argumentative research essay in which you will identify and argue a position regarding a cultural myth of your choosing. The purpose of your research will be to investigate a belief that is widely-held by a large proportion of people in a given community. In your essay you must define this belief as well as the community who holds it (a national community, a city community, an intellectual, religious, or philosophical community, etc.). Then you must investigate this belief using critical thinking and scholarly research in order to assess it. In your essay, you must address the following: what this belief is; who holds it; what justifies the belief/what causes the community to hold it; how the belief is passed from one person to another; and the individual and social effects of that belief. Any other directions of thought or research are appropriate as well. You must gather at least four reputable sources for this essay, using them to help inform both sides of the conversation. Works cited page must be annotated and you do not need to submit an author's note. I expect five to six pages, double-spaced, in MLA format.
