Literacy is usually defined as the ability to read and write in one's native language. However, a person can have many different types of literacy: information literacy, technological literacy, computer literacy, visual literacy, political literacy, engineering literacy, and the list goes on and on.

A "narrative" is a true story that has either an explicit or implicit point, or "moral." Generally, a good narrative puts the reader into a certain situation or experience by describing it in vivid detail. In other words, the writer describes things in a way that allows the reader to see, hear, smell, taste, feel, or imagine what the writer experienced in his or her story.

In this assignment, you will choose a type of literacy that you have learned, and then you will write a narrative sharing your learning experience with the reader and expressing a clear point or "moral." Your goal is to tell your story in a way that allows the reader to understand your learning experience and how it leads to your point or "moral."

Expectations:

Your essay should have an introduction with a thesis, body paragraphs that support the thesis, and a conclusion that restates the thesis and sums up the paper.

The introduction should identify the specific type of literacy you are writing about (e.g., reading literacy) and explain why you think this is a legitimate literacy (e.g., why is "computer literacy" a valid literacy?).

The thesis in your introduction should state the overall point or "moral" of the story of your learning experience.

The body paragraphs should relate the story of your learning experience in a detailed and well-organized manner. Tell a good story.

The conclusion should restate the point or "moral" of your story. Do not copy-and-paste from your introduction. Say the same thing, only better. Then, sum up the paper as a whole.

Lastly, don't forget to give your paper an interesting, descriptive title.

Requirements:

• Addresses some type of literacy
• Tells the story of learning that literacy
• Uses MLA-style Heading and Format
• Runs at least 600 words

Reflection on the Literacy Narrative:

To improve your writing, you must be able to evaluate its strengths and weaknesses and then determine how to improve the latter. This reflection paper asks you to reflect on your Literacy Narrative's strengths and weaknesses so that you can improve your writing for the next paper.

Write a 300-word essay that answers the following questions:

1) What do you like about your Literacy Narrative? Why?

2) What do you dislike about your Literacy Narrative? Why?

3) Why did your Literacy Narrative turn out the way it did?

4) If you rewrote the Literacy Narrative, how would you improve the process that you used to write it?

5) When you finished rewriting the Literacy Narrative, what would different about it?

Depending on the content of your Literacy Narrative and your thoughts about it, you may answer some of these questions in more detail and depth than others. For example, if you like half a dozen things but dislike only one or two, then your answers to those questions may be very different lengths. And that is fine as long as you answer each question.
