A steel member supported by a tie bar has a load of 15 000 lbs on it. If the force on the steel member of 1.2 in2 cross section is 14,180 lbs and the force on the tie bar of diameter 0.5 inches is 13,090 lbs and UTS for steel is 30,000 lbs/in2 calculate the

a) Stress in each component and whether this is too great or not

b) New diameter of the component that exceeds the UTS for steel

Consider the design of a drink container. Discuss what the design requirements are of the container (assume this will be sold in a shop). From these requirements write a short list of possible materials with justifications. From this short list come up with a suitable material for the container.
