The supporting beam for a maintenance access platform strip spans 7 m and is to be simply supported at 1 m from each end as sketched in Figure 1. Assume that the beam could be subject to a distributed load of 2 kN/m and one point load of 6 kN. The distributed loading may or may not act throughout the length of the beam, and the point load may be applied anywhere. Determine the worst possible values for the sagging and hogging moments in the beam. You must justify your choice of loading.
