Al is painting a right cylinder storage tank. In sequence to purchase the correct amount of paint he requires to know the total surface area to be painted. Which formula will he use if he does not paint the bottom of the tank?

The area of the base is π times radius squared. The area of the curved region is two times π times radius times height. Remember there is only one circular region because the storage tank would be on the ground. This area would not be painted.
