What is Waterston Shunt in palliative operations?

In this, direct anastomosis between the posterior aspect of ascending aorta and anterior aspect right pulmonary artery is done directly. Care should be taken not to make too large an anastomosis. It is very easy to overdo this shunt. This will cause excessive flow and may lead to pulmonary hypertension and pulmonary vascular disease later on.
