Q. What are the stages of mitosis?

Mitosis involves replication of DNA and its separation into two new daughter cells. Whereas only four phases of mitosis are often listed. Entire process is actually total of six phases:

Interphase:comprises extensive preparation for division process.

• Prophase:Condensation of chromosomes; the nuclear membrane disappears; formation of the spindle apparatus; chromosomes attach to spindle fibers.

• Metaphase: Chromosomes, attached by spindle fibers. Align along mid-line of a cell.

• Anaphase:Centromere splits and chromatin move apart.

• Telophase:Nuclear membrane reforms around newly divided chromosomes.

• Cytokinesis:Division of cytoplasm, cell membranes and organelles take place. In plants. A new cell wall forms.
