Coding for stimulus intensity: If AP's are all-or-none responses that do not vary in amplitude, how does the NS distinguish between stimuli intensity? (whisper vs. loud noise!).

The size of the receptor potential (generator potential) will affect the frequency at which the neuron fires AP's along the axon:

Note: Hence a loud noise is distinguished from a soft whisper mainly by the rate at which the nerve fires AP's. Eventually, a maximum rate is reached as nerve cell membranes are REFRACTORY (cannot respond to a stimulus immediately after the previous one).
