Principle of adding cooling pipes, Civil Engineering

Question

What is key principle of adding cooling pipes or yet using cold water for concrete in concreting operation?

Answer

These methods aim at reducing placing temperature and falling thermal cracks induced during concreting of enormous pours. Because final concreting temperature has to be ambient temperature, reducing initial placing temperature will also lower peak hydration temperature. Therefore, temperature divergence between hydration peak and ambient temperature is reduced so and subsequently thermal effect to concrete structure can be abridged by controlling placing temperature.
