Plants of the open water zone

In this zone plants are restricted to the limnetic one and generally consist of phytoplankton such as dinoflagellates, blue green algae and green algae. Of these the single celled planktonic algae are the main producers for the lake as a whole. The profundal region of the open water zone has no green plants as it is dark and so cannot support photosynthesis.
