Nucleophilic addition reactions:
While the addition reaction takes place on account of the initial attack of nucleophile, the reaction is known as a nucleophilic addition reaction. Due to existence of strongly electronegative oxygen atom, the p -electrons of the carbon-oxygen double bond in carbonyl group (C = O) obtain shifted towards the oxygen atom and thus such bond is highly polarised. This makes carbon molecules of the carbonyl group electron deficient.
Uses of Acetic anhydride (a) Acetic anhydride is used as an acetylating agent. (b) Acetic anhydride is used for the detection and estimation of hydroxyl and amino group.
