Merchant force circle diagram, Mechanical Engineering

Assignment Help:

(a) Draw neatly and accurately the Merchant force circle diagram. Mention clearly the forces involved, the constructional steps and the assumptions made [do not derive the forces]

(b) For an orthogonal process on a mild steel, using the following data :

Depth of cut = 0.3 mm

Chip thickness = 0.85 mm

Angle = 10o

Horizontal component of cutting force = 900 N

Vertical component of cutting force = 450 N

Determine :

(i) The coefficient of function b/w the tool & the Chip.

(ii) Shear plane angle.

(iii) Friction angle

(iv) Compressive force on sheer plane.

(v) Shear force on the shear plane.

(vi) Resultant cutting force.

Explain clearly the formulas for all of the above & then solve.
