The Lennox to Bowmanville 500 kV circuit, spanning a distance of about 180 km,
has series (inductive) impedance j 0.0224 pu and shunt (capacitive) admittance j 2.34 pu,
quoted on base values of 500 kV and 100 MVA. Determine the following:
(a) Line charging current (in Amps) drawn by the line when supplied from one terminal
with the supply bus operating at 500 kV (note that system/bus operating voltage is
always quoted on a phase-to-phase basis, unless specified otherwise)
(b) Steady-state phase to ground voltage (in pu) at the opposite line terminal (due to
Ferranti rise) when the line is placed on potential as above. (HINT: For this
calculation, the line is modeled by its nominal-pi representation, with half of the line’s
shunt capacitance connected to ground on each side of the total (series) line
inductance, as depicted below.
