Life

  • Science is originated from latin word scientia, which means knowledge.
  • Biology is a branch deals with living beings.
  • Biology word is originated from two greek words, Bios = living being, logous = to study i.e. to study living beings.
  • It seeks to understand how living beings perform their vital activities and interact with other living and non living beings.
  • Therefore now a days we use the word "Life science".
  • Biology word given by Lamark & Traviranus in 1802 (French Naturalist).
  • Aristotle is known as father of Biology, Zoology & Emrbyology.
  • Biology is futher divided into 2 parts -
  • 1. Botany - Greek word - Botane = plants
  • 2. Zoology - Greek words - Zoon = animals
  • Logous = to study    i.e. to study animals
  • Recently a third group is also separately recognized as microbiology (study of microbs).
  • Louis pasteur is known as Father of Microbiology.
  • Theophrastus (pupil of aristotle) is known as Father of Botany.
  • William Turner is known as "Father of English Botany".
  • William Rauxberg is known as "Father of Indian Botany".
  • There are 12,00000 animals and 5,00000 plants in world, 15000 living ones are increased every year.
