Explain the structure of Intermediate Filaments?

Intermediate filaments, about 8 to 10 nm in diameter, are so named because they are intermediate in size between microfilaments and microtubules. These medium-sized filaments serve along with microtubules and microfilaments to form the cytoskeleton or framework of the cell. Intermediate filaments help to maintain the position of the nucleus in the center of the cell. They are the most stable of the intracellular filaments, and they are composed of fibrous proteins similar to those that make up hair and skin.
