Essential nutrient: Deficiency leads to anemia, impaired immune response, reduced worker productivity, impaired cognitive development in children.

Excessive iron stores may increase risk of cancer and heart disease. Catalyst: Fe2+ and Fe3+ catalyse lipid peroxidation in foods.
