Explain the Functions of the Kidney

The functions of the kidneys, as you already know, are to form urine and to pass urine for excretion, maintain water and electrolyte balance. The bean-shaped kidneys, each about the size of a child's fist, performs several functions essential to health, the most important of which is to filter blood and produce urine.

Without the kidneys, waste products and other toxins would soon build up in the blood to fatal levels. The kidneys also regulate blood pressure and the level of vital salts in the blood, as well as, secrete the hormone that controls the production of red blood cells. Hence, the physiological functions of the kidneys are many.
