Explain Priority encoder with an example.

Ans.

Priority encoder- Basically an encoder is a combinational circuit which performs the inverse operation of a decoder. The input code has, the device is generally termed an encoder, if a device output code has fewer bits.

For example: 2n-to-n, priority encoders. The easiest encoder is a 2n-to-n binary encoder, where this has only one of 2n inputs = 1 and the output is the n-bit binary number consequent to the active input.

One of the main commonly utilized input devices for a digital system is a set of ten-switches, one for each numeral in between 0 and 9. These switches produce 1 or 0 logic levels in response to turning them off or on. While an exact number is to be fed to the digital circuit in BCD code, then the switch consequent to which number is pressed.
