Explain expansion in Red Cells during pregnancy?

Production of red cells is stimulated and their numbers gradually rise.  However, as compared to the expansion in plasma volume, their increase is not as large; there is an increase in red cell mass by 20%. As the plasma volume increases much more than the red cell mass, there is usually a drop in the haemoglobin levels around 34th  week of gestation.
