Commutator
The function of a commutator is to change alternating current induced in the armature into unidirectional current. The commutator is of cylindrical shape and is made up of wedge-shaped hard drawn copper. These segments are insulated from each other with thin layers of mica sheet. The number of segments is equal to the number of armature coils. Every commutator segment is linked to the armature conductor by means of a copper lug or riser.
