Therapeutic approaches that scientists are pursuing include transplanting cells to replace those which are damaged or using growth factors to enhance survival of those remaining, applying immune therapies to interrupt dangerous inflammatory responses, and targeting so-called molecular "chaperones" which act as facilitators of cell degeneration.
