The Ward-Leonard system, which is used in the control of large dc motors employed in rolling mills, is a highly flexible arrangement for effecting position and speed control of a separately excited dc motor. A simplified schematic diagram of such a system is shown in Figure (a), in which the tachometer, error detector, and amplifier are represented functionally rather than by electric circuit connections.
