Determine the Size and Number of Aeration Basins?

For a community of 100,000, determine the size and number of aeration basins in a municipal activated sludge treatment facility. The wastewater characteristics are:

 Average per-capita flow rate = 100gal/capita-day

 Hydraulic residence time = 6 hrs

 Wastewater concentration

 BOD5 = 220mg/L

      SS = 220 mg/L

Ans: Average flow rate = (100 gal/capita-day)(100.000pop)(106gal/Mgal)=10 Mgal/day

The size of the aeration basin may be determined based on a typical value for hydraulic residence time of 6 hr (4-8 hrs is the range) for a conventional activated sludge process.
