Q. Describe the complex spatial patterns of biodiversity?
To describe the complex spatial patterns of biodiversity, ecologists and biogeographers have found it useful to express species richness into four major categories:
1. Point richness
2. Alpha (a) richness,
3. Beta (b) richness, and
4. Gamma (g) richness
Point richness refers to the number of species that can be found at a single point in space. Alpha (a) richness refers to the number of species found in small, homogenous area. Alpha diversity refers to the diversity in a particular area or ecosystem and is usually expressed by the number of species (i.e. species richness) in that ecosystem.
