The prevalence of iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) are seen more among adolescent's young adults and school age children. More feinales are affected than males. The area is said to be endemic when more than 5% of the population or children aged 6-12 years have goitre.
National Iodine Deficiency Disorder Control Programme (NIDDCP) was named in 1992, of the original NGCP launched in 1962. It takes into its ambit the control of a wide spectrum of reducing the prevalence of IDD below 10 percent by 2010. The Tenth Plan goals are to also achieve universal access to iodized salt and generate district wise data on iodized salt consumption. Therefore, this is a population targeted programme and not exclusively for children and the adolescents.
