Human placental lactogen, with a structure similar to the growth hormone, increases throughout pregnancy. Its rate of production parallels the rate of placental growth and is a good indicator of placental function. At the peak rate of secretion, the amount produced is 1-2 g per day, much higher than any other hormone.
