Define briefly about the Conjugated Proteins?
Conjugated proteins are made up of simple proteins combined with a non- proteinous substance. The non-proteinous substance is known as prosthetic group or cofactor.
Examples:
Chromoproteins: Haemoglobin, in which the prosthetic group is iron.
Phosphoproteins: casein in milk, in which prosthetic group is phosphoric acid, vitellin in egg yolk. Lipoproteins: HDL (high density lipoprotein), LDL (low density lipoprotein) and VLDL (very low density lipoproteins), the prosthetic group is lipid
Glycoprotein: Ovomucoid of egg white.
Nucleoproteins: ribosomes and viruses.
Metalloproteins: alcohol dehydrogenase, a Zn containing enzyme.
