These results show certain characteristics of nutrient uptake.

Selectivity: Certain mineral elements are taken up preferentially while others are discriminated against or nearly excluded.
Accumulation: The concentration of mineral elements can be much higher in the plant sap than in external solution. This means the uptake is against concentration gradient.
Genotype: Plant species differ genetically in nutrient uptake characteristics.
