This quantitative research study used retrospective logistic and sampling regression to explore possible relationships between a discrete set of 27 admission factors (independent variables) and student success in a professional pre-licensure nursing education plan at a large Midwestern two-year college. The admission factors were clustered into six categories: policy, academic, personal and experiential factors, and campus entry and exit locations. In this study, student success was defined as on-time graduation within original admission cohort and success on the first attempt at writing the licensing examination NCLEX-RN subsequent program graduation. Retrospective sampling was used to check a sample of 572 cases drawn from the original population of 715 potential subjects. The population from which the sample was drawn for this study consisted of individuals admitted over a six-year period to a multi-campus college based pre-licensure two-year professional nursing education program. Because of the dichotomous nature of the variables included in the study, logistic regression was selected as the method for data analysis. Six admission factors (variables) were found to be important in predicting first-time success on the licensing examination for graduates of the two-year nursing education program studied: standardized admission tests; number of additional semesters needed to complete the educational program; previous Certified Nursing Assistant experience; years of previous health care experience; entry campus location; and taking a standardized admission test.
