Brake wear inspection and free play adjustment , Mechanical Engineering

Assignment Help:

Brake Wear Inspection and Free Play Adjustment: Brake wear inspection is very important because worn out brake shoe does not provide good braking. At some point of time they need to be replaced. Until then the brake free play can be adjusted.

STEPS

  • Rear brake pedal free play is checked by pressing the brake pedal. It should be between 20-30 mm.
  • If this is not within the specified limit it is adjusted by turning the brake adjuster nut.
  • After the adjustment, the brake shoe wear is inspected.
  • Press the brake pedal fully and brake shoe wear mark is observed.
  • If both the marks are aligned then the brake shoes should be replaced.
  • It should also be checked that the rear stop switch functions on pressing the brake pedal.
  • Similarly adjustment and inspection is made for the front brake.
  • Brake cam is lubricated for proper functioning of the cam and brake.

Important points to remember :

  • Brake pedal free play must be between 20-30 mm.
  • Press brake pedal to maximum possible.
  • Front brake lever free play must be between 10-20 mm.
