A floppy is about 0.64 mm thick and is available in diameters 5.25 inch and 3.5 inch. Data are arranged in form of tracks and sectors. Tracks are numbered sequentially inwards with outermost being 0. Utility of index hole is that when it comes under a photo senser, the system comes to know that read/write head is now positioned on first sector of current track.
