Automatic Voltage Booster

The functioning of Automatic Voltage Booster (AVB) is same to in which of the series capacitor. Automatic Voltage Booster is an on-load tap changer. It boosts the voltage at its point of situation in discrete steps. This, in turn, improves the voltage profile and decreases the losses in the section beyond its point of location towards the receiving end. An AVB commonly has a total voltage boost of 10% in four equivalent steps. The loss reduction is straight proportional to voltage boost.

The maximum permissible voltage boost is limited through the difference among the permissible maximum voltage and voltage at the point of location of AVB. The difficulty of determination of optimal location and percentage of boost of AVB is created as an optimization problem. The goal function is the cost of energy saved because of desirable constraint in which the voltages at all sections should not exceed the statutory upper and lower limits. An interactive category of algorithm is adopted in the proposed solution approach.
