Astigmation control: In most modern oscilloscopes there is an additional focusing control marked

Astigmation. This is used to correct an effect which exactly is analogous to astigmatism in optical lenses. To focus the spot correctly, it is necessary to stop it near the centre of the screen by switching off the successive adjustment of focus and Astigmation controls.
