Addition catalysed by base - Aldehydes and Ketones

In the existence of a base one equivalent of an alcohol reacts along with only one equivalent of the carbonyl compound. The product acquired is termed as hemiacetal (in case of aldehyde) and hemiketal (in case of ketone). The reaction is opposite. There is generally equilibrium among reactants and product.
