To design a cantilevered truss to support the loads shown in the figures, two layouts are proposed as shown in Figs. A and B. All truss members are steel with allowable stress of 20ksi. (a) Determine the minimum cross section area needed for both layouts to prevent buckling (Pcr = p2EI/l2) for the truss with the minimum total weight by using a circular cross section. (b) Which layout has the minimum total weight?
