Question

Although there is some value to written tests for job knowledge, skills and abilities; solely relying on them can lead to the company missing out on some promising candidates (Ali, 2021). One issue with written ability tests is that they contain racial biases, with Latino and Black candidates being at a disadvantage while comparing to the scores of Caucasian individuals (Schwind, Uggerslev, Wagar, & Fassina, 2022, p. 163). Another issue is with the format of tests. Tests are very uniform and will screen out individuals that are potentially excellent at their job, but bad at taking tests (Bika, 2023). Individuals with learning disabilities may also get screened out even though they may be knowledgeable and have the skills/abilities to do the job; they may not be proficient with written tests due to the nature of their disability. Written tests also do not allow the employer to see the candidate as a whole person (Bika, 2023). A candidate may look great on paper, but when it's time to work, they may be unreliable and uninterested in learning, something that test scores alone cannot tell about a potential candidate (Bika, 2023).
