Work legally and ethically
About this document
This document is to be used as a portfolio to collect evidence for the unit CHCLEG001 Work legally and ethically.
Evidence collection
In this section, the details of the evidence you need to collect are outlined along with instructions about what you need to do.
You will need to complete these sections of your Portfolio:
• Section 1: Reflective Journal
• Section 2: Case Study
• Section 3: Policy and Procedure Review.
Section 1: Reflective Journal
Fill out the Reflective Journal by answering the questions below. There is one journal for each role play. Make sure your supervisor signs off your journal.
Journal: Role Play 1
Write a summary of the situation you experienced. Was it a legal issue or an ethical issue that you encountered?
Referring to the relevant procedure, what details in the procedure do you feel were breached based on what you saw happen in this situation? List three things in the procedure that you feel were not met.
Using your understanding of the relevant procedure, outline how you would have handled this situation if you were in a real workplace environment.
Follow procedure to write an email to your assessor (in the role of the supervisor) and report the situation. Attach your email to your Portfolio.
Understanding ethics and responsibility can help when interpreting workplace procedures and reporting obligations.
Journal: Role Play 2
Write a summary of the situation you experienced. Was it a legal issue or an ethical issue that you encountered?
Referring to the relevant procedure, identify three things that occurred during the role play that led you to identify the type of requirement being breached.
Section 2: Case Study
Read the case study in the CHCLEG001 Simulation Pack and complete the questions below. Provide as much detail as you can in your responses.
Case Study
Referring to the relevant procedure/s, identify what occurred in the case study that led you to identify the type of requirement being breached.
Was it a legal or ethical situation?
Outline the steps you would take if this situation occurred to you in the real workplace environment.
What outcomes might you expect to occur once you had reported the situation?
Write an email to your supervisor that reports the situation you have found yourself in and any breaches of procedure for which you may be responsible.
Reviewing business laws and workplace obligations may assist when identifying legal responsibilities in case studies.
Section 3: Improving Work Practices
In this section you will document how your workplace could improve its work practices to ensure its legal and ethical obligations are better met.
Based on the role plays you participated in and the case study you completed, identify three improvements that could be made to work practices to ensure that staff are meeting their legal and ethical responsibilities.
Now review the three policies and procedures in the CHCLEG001 Simulation Pack.
Think about how you felt when reading the procedures and then when completing the two role plays.
• Was there anything in the procedures that did not make sense?
• Were there any errors in the procedures that could lead to confusion when trying to follow them?
• Were there any clauses/sections in the procedures that were not detailed enough or were confusing?
• Did any procedure seem unclear in regards to reporting mechanisms?
Write your comments here.
Applying principles of business ethics may help when reviewing workplace policies and recommending improvements.
Now take a copy of the three policies and procedures in the CHCLEG001 Simulation Pack and make changes based on your comments above. Use the Track Changes feature so your assessor can see what you have done.
Save each procedure under its name with V2.0.
Share your updated procedures with your assessor (in the role of your supervisor) and two colleagues (your assessor will assign you the names of two classmates you will send your procedures to).
Ensure your updates are clear, easy to read and free of spelling errors.
Your assessor will give you a date by which you are to submit your procedures.
Send your procedures by email and provide a brief outline in the email body about what updates you made.
