Homework: The Sema Foundation Organization Research Paper
This homework is an analysis of an organization whose work intersects with religion, culture, and public life anywhere in the world.
Write a paper analyzing an appropriate organization.
For this homework, should identify an organization or institution that is working on issues pertaining to religion, culture, and/or public life. The organization does not need to be based in the US. Examples could range as widely as a faith-based non-profit organization (i.e., World Vision), an international non-governmental organization (i.e., the World Health Organization), or a standard non-profit organization (i.e., Partners in Health). These can also be smaller and local (to the metro-Phoenix area), like the Arizona Faith Network, or the Sema Foundation. Learn as much as you can about the organization through their website, publications/literature, and/or social media channels.
In the paper, give a brief description of the organization's history, work, and mission. Analyze how the organization presents itself in light of the categories we have discussed in this class (religion, faith, culture, well-being, health, politics, justice, etc.).
Some additional questions to consider include the following:
1) How do they market their work, and what does their self-presentation indicate who their audience or constituents are or might be?
2) How does their work illuminate the relationships between religion and public life, or politics?
3) In what ways would you say their work is "political"?
4) What do they mean by "religion"?
