Imagine that you have crash-landed on an alien planet, Aurora, along with 3,000 other students. The inhabitants of this new planet, Aurora, appear remarkably earth-like and friendly. They speak English, and it is impossible to look at someone and tell if they are an earthling or if they are from Aurora. You also learn that the Aurorans live only in same-sex housing and that their children are produced under strict government control-in a laboratory via artificial insemination. In sum, the public or private display of affection is strictly forbidden. And, the consequences for violating these norms appear severe. To illustrate the severity of punishment for violating the Auroran's cultural norms, you hear that two earthlings sitting in a restaurant holding hands were beaten and run out of the establishment. Another earthling who kissed someone on the cheek in public was reported missing the next day and has not been heard from since.

You become angry and go to the local government to voice a complaint. After you present your case, two guards rough you up and throw you out on the street. One says quietly in your ear, "If you're smart, you won't bring that kind of thing up again." Despite these problems, the Aurorans express a desire to welcome you to their planet. They provide each of you with an apartment, a job, and a small car. Unfortunately, your spaceship was damaged beyond repair, and the Aurorans do not have advanced technology for space travel. All hope of escaping from the planet is gone. You also learn that the planet's only hospitable land mass is approximately the size of Texas, with similar numbers of inhabitants in urban, suburban, and rural areas. Now, you must decide what you will do, on Aurora.

Participate in an interpersonal discussion and address the following questions. There are no right or wrong answers.

1. Would you adopt the alien way of life?
2. Would you seek out romantic or sexual relationships?
3. How would you feel (emotionally) about your situation?
4. How would you protect yourself from danger?
5. How would you act in public?
6. How would you identify other earth people? (be very specific and devise at least two different systems)
7. If you had children, how would you raise them?
8. Assuming that earthlings would be stuck on the planet for at least 400 years, what would your future plans be?
9. Can you think of any people here in our own country, right now, who might feel the same way that you did doing this exercise?
