Assignment:
PART 1
Open two Internet search engines and pose as a concerned parent.
Type questions such as "Why does my girl like boy stuff?" "Should I be worried if my girl likes short hair" or "Should I be worried if my daughter doesn't like to wear dresses?" into the search engine in one window;
Type questions such as "Why does my boy like girl stuff?" "Should I be worried if my boy likes barbie dolls?" or "Should I be worried if my son likes ballet dancing?" in the other search engine.
Review the two pages of the results.
- How are the results similar or different?
- Do the results reflect gender inequality? How so? Click through and explore the returned pages if you desire.
- Find two friends (or family members) who are parents; Pose the hypothetical questions (i.e., if they have a gender-atypical child), and see if their reactions are similar or different from the web search results.
PART 2
Find a print advertisement aimed at/featuring a woman (this can include ads in magazines or ones found online and printed). In your discussion post:
1) Share an ad that shows a woman performing emphasized femininity. Use a few sentences to explain the concept and describe in what way the ad shows emphasized femininity.
2) Find another ad that either shows a woman performing feminine apologetic or emphatic sameness [Use a few sentences to explain the concept of your choosing and describe in what way the ad shows this type of femininity]
3) Discuss if the people who made the ads intended for female or male consumers to like and identify with the woman;
After you posted yours, check all threads posted by your classmates.
- Do you see any pattern emerging from all the posts; For example, think about the concept of the male gaze, do you see products that are marketed for men are more likely to use emphasized feminity as opposed to emphatic sameness vs. products that are marketed for women?
- Based solely on these advertisements, what is the ideal woman like in our society?
