Question

Maureen Connor is a school nurse in a busy middle school health room. Maureen has 14 students with diabetes mellitus (type 1), 88 students diagnosed with asthma, 22 students with developmental delays, and several other students with other underlying illnesses that she closely monitors. Besides yearly screenings in vision/hearing, verification of immunizations, monitoring students with chronic illnesses and daily student "ill" visits, Maureen provides education to students in the classroom. Careful records of quality controls are also essential to Maureen's daily routine. Referrals to community-based healthcare are often made for ill students as well as those who need restorative services such as dental work or evaluation for eyeglasses. Reduced price clinics and free clinics have been popular lately with the decline in the neighborhood economy. Maureen also makes time to visit faculty meetings as often as possible to provide education to classroom teachers regarding diabetes, asthma, or any other health-related topic. Private consultation with students and parents can also encompass a large part of Maureen's day. (Learning Objectives 3, 4, 6)
