Case Study: Tamika is a 24-year-old, new-to-practice registered nurse (RN) who has completed 6 months of orientation as an operating room (OR) nurse at Packer Community Hospital (PCH) on the day shift and is now scheduled for the 3- 11 p.m. shift. She is apprehensive because she has heard many stories about the attitudes of a number of nurses on that shift and is concerned that they may not help her if she asks. Her first shift went well, but her second shift takes a drastic turn. The unit is very busy and short-staffed, and the nurse manager approaches Tamika: "Tamika, we are in a bind and if there are any emergencies, I need you to circulate. You will be fine. Just remember everything you were taught. The other staff will help you." Later that evening, a bus overturns, and seven patients are sent to PCH. Tamika is assigned to circulate with Dr. Chen, a new general surgeon to Packer. As the case proceeds, the patient starts to hemorrhage; Dr. Chen demands instruments that Tamika has never heard of. Tamika breaks scrub and tries to find someone to help her. Everyone is busy and harshly tells her to ask someone else. Tamika finally finds the instruments, scrubs, and returns to the OR. As she proudly rushes into the room and says, "Dr. Chen, I found what you need!" Dr. Chen peers over his mask and yells: "You are too late! I don't need it now. You are totally incompetent, and I will see to it that you NEVER work with me again!"
