What's the difference between achieved and ascribed status? In the United States we live in an open class system, where vertical social mobility is certainly a possibility. However, many people feel trapped by some limitations of their ascribed statuses (things like gender and race), and feel as if they live in more of a closed system, where mobility is less attainable than we like to think.
