Question: This week we've read texts and watched videos about how and where managers get their power, influence, and authority from, and various ways they exercise it and for what purposes. You read less about the responsibility that comes with the power, although the Simon Sinek video begins to hint at this in his stories of the people in organizations who sacrifice for others.

  • Please think about the many ways that managers exert influence over employees. Give an example of how a manager in your own employment history has used power or authority positively to benefit you. Based on your reading for this week, what kind of power did the manager have in this instance? What was it about his or her power that impacted you?
  • Now give an example of how a manager in your employment past has used power or authority to harm or negatively affect you. Again, based on your reading for this week, what kind of power did the manager have in this situation? What was it about his or her power that impacted you?
  • And finally, how does a manager or supervisor's power carry responsibility? There's an old adage that with great power comes great responsibility. Try this on as you think about becoming a manager. What do you imagine it might be like to have such power...and in what ways might such power carry great responsibility?
